A look at Amazon Web Services CloudWatch

When managed data or servers hosted in cloud environmentsMonitoring is essential to understand the performance of instances and storage and to detect possible downtime. This monitoring aims to generate alerts in the event of an incident and allows for better management of resources.

What is Amazon CloudWatch?

Amazon CloudWatch enables developers, cloud architects, and administrators to monitor cloud-based applications in real-time. AWSCloudWatch works by collecting real-time monitoring and operations data in the form of logs, events, and metrics, allowing IT teams to understand requests, latency, and server storage or CPU usage.
It should be noted that this service is configured automatically and according to the demands of the business. In addition, being a service scalable, allows you to monitor metrics from additional AWS services or external applications. What is most striking about CloudWatch is that it offers a unified view of all contracted resources and services, whether they are hosted on local servers or in the cloud.

Advantages of CloudWatch metrics

As we already mentioned, this service is very easy to manage thanks to its great integration capacity. Among the benefits it provides we can find:

  • Easy and fast tracking: All the data and reports that CloudWatch provides allow users to track application, resource usage, operational issues, and limitations. This helps streamline IT operations.
  • Compatible with various instances: Although it is most commonly used with EC2 instances, you can also monitor volumes from Amazon Elastic Book Store (EBS) or Elastic Load Balancers (ELB) and RDS instances, in addition to other external sources.
  • Maximum scaling speed and flexibility: Being automated, it is able to instantly detect when scaling of an instance is required.
  • Always alert: Amazon CloudWatch allows you to set alarms or automate actions based on predefined thresholds or algorithms. It offers tools such as Auto Scaling for EC2 or CloudWatch Events for Lambda, SNS, and CloudFormation services.
  • Basic supervision: With this service you can select specific metrics for tracking and analysis.

Monitoring options

As if that were not enough, CloudWatch has two types of monitoring adapted to the needs and investment capacity of companies in terms of EC2 resources:

  1. Basic monitoring: No additional fee is required beyond the initial fee. Includes seven pre-selected metrics and three additional health check metrics.
  2. Detailed monitoring: for an additional charge, where the frequency of all metrics is increased to one-minute intervals.

As you have seen, AWS offers instant solutions and takes care of all the configuration and maintenance according to your company's requirements.
