The ideal type of DRaaS for your company (II)

In the last post, we talked about Disaster Recovery As A Service solutions and their connection to backup systems, disaster recovery systems and, in general, to the cloud. Let's see below what the main types of DRaaS are.   https://mkt.apser.es/ebook-reemplazando-la-cinta-por-la-nube-en-los-wf-de-backup

Classification of disaster recovery services

Although disaster recovery services are practically tailor-made for each company that requests them, they can be classified into three basic types: the so-called “self-service” DRaaS, assisted DRaaS and managed DRaaS. Each of these categories is explained below:

1. “Self-service” DRaaS

In the “self-service” recovery model, the contracting company is responsible for:
  • of every aspect of planning
  • from the execution of the data backup
  • of system testing
  • of the information recovery process in the event of a disaster
This means that when an incident occurs, the IT team of the contracting company is completely responsible for executing the recovery. In this case, theThe contracting company obtains from the service provider the tools to make backup copies of its data and applications on its own account.. The contracted company, for its part, is not involved in the realization of the backups nor is it responsible for the frequency with which the contracting company makes these backups. The reason that justifies the contracting company to relate with a DRaaS provider, within this management model, is the fact of being able to acquire a public or private cloud for the storage of your data. Although self-service models offer the lower investment option, when compared to the other two types, can only be considered suitable for organizations with IT experience in disaster data recovery and with adequate bandwidth to manage such a recovery environment. It is worth noting that a self-service solution may present inconveniences in scenarios where the contracting company's information technology equipment cannot enter its facilities, as is often the case in the case of a natural disaster. This element allows us to deduce that it represents a considerable risk that must be analyzed before its implementation. It can be argued that, in an organization with a team of engineers who are experts in data recovery, it is very likely that this model could become the best option.

2. Assisted DRaaS

This part should be started by pointing out that few providers offer this data recovery option. In this category, The service provider acts as an advisor as backup and recovery solutions are implemented, tested, and managed. The contracting company receives from the provider the tools to build and manage its disaster recovery plan and The supplier is in “standby mode” to offer you advice and assistance. In this way, in assisted models, the contracting company is responsible for all aspects of its company's backup and data recovery plan, and if a disaster occurs, the provider will be available to assist in the process of recovering data and applications, but it depends on the contracting company making the request for such assistance. This implies that This is a process that is not automatic. Likewise, if any member of the contracting company's IT team is not available or cannot access their company's facilities, the service provider can intervene to help with the solution, which helps reduce the risks of natural disasters, as indicated in the "self-service" category. The "assisted" recovery system is Suitable for organizations that have IT resources, but prefer to rely on an external expert that provides guidance and support during the implementation and administration of a data recovery process. It is important to clarify at this stage that under this model, the company contracting the service will not normally receive any concrete offer on the speed with which the data recovery will be carried out, since the provider does not manage the entire process. Therefore, this category is a good option for companies that want the flexibility of the cloud, but do not need immediate recovery time.

3. Managed DRaaS

In this type of data recovery service, the provider creates and manages the contracting company's data backup and recovery plan. This means that The provider is responsible for planning, testing and managing the data backup strategy and its recovery in the event of a disaster.. A supplier under these conditions manages almost all aspects of the backup and recovery, so that the IT team of the contracting company can focus on other priorities of its business, such as innovation. In the event of a disaster, the provider must carry out the recovery process, whether this means working together with the IT team of the contracting company or performing the corresponding procedures completely independently. This type of disaster recovery service, as can be deduced, generally requires a greater investment than the other two options, but provides the highest level of support and the greatest guarantee that the recovery will meet the requirements of the contracting company. In that sense, it is the most suitable for organizations with IT teams that participate in strategic or key operations of their company or that require immediate recovery processes.
