Types of computer outsourcing

  • Total outsourcing: the external provider manages all of the company's IT services.
  • Partial outsourcing: the provider manages only a part of the services, which limits the risk.
  • Pseudo-outsourcing: This strategy is common in large companies. It consists of the business group creating a company specialising in IT management services that provides support to the rest of the companies in the group.
  • Transitional outsourcing: used as a temporary solution when changing systems. The provider manages the old system while the IT department implements the new system.
  • Offshore outsourcing: this involves contracting these services outside the country for strategic or economic reasons.
  • Multiple outsourcing: in this option, several providers are contracted to respond to different needs in a flexible manner.
  • Strategic outsourcing: in this option, the client and the supplier develop a joint strategy to achieve their goals.

Most common services from IT support providers

IT support is one of the most frequently outsourced services. Generally speaking, We can group the services of these IT providers into three large groups:: terminal and device maintenance, server maintenance, and application and software maintenance.
  • Device and endpoint maintenance includes hardware and software installations and upgrades, user support, malware removal, and other problem corrections. It is the most visible part of IT support.
  • Server maintenance is of great importance for companies, as crucial information for the company is often stored here. This task has been greatly simplified in recent years thanks to cloud storage services, which in many cases make it possible to do without a physical server.
  • Finally, application and software maintenance is the maintenance and updating of the company's software applications. This service is often outsourced as it requires a highly technical profile.
To realise the importance of these tasks, we only have to consider that maintenance and repair account for three quarters of the IT budget of companies.

Pros and cons of outsourcing to IT providers

As we have seen, when it comes to managing a company's ICT, there are two main options that can be combined in different ways: having an internal department or outsourcing. The second option is very suitable for responding to specific needs of small and medium-sized companies, as it represents a lower cost. On the other hand, its disadvantages are that the external provider is less involved in the needs and objectives of the company and that its reaction times to emergencies are longer. Choosing one option or the other will depend on the size of the company and its specific needs.   Related Posts:   Feel free to download our free guide to learn more about this topic:
