Five Flames Mobile:
Deploy application on AWS platform
What challenge was the company facing?
Glasgow Airport had decided that it wanted its app rolled out on Amazon Web Services. This app, available for iOS and Android, provides travellers with real-time information on the status of their flights, selecting a specific flight to receive notifications, surveys, interactive map, discount coupons to use in the airport’s own shops and a follow-up of other features with the aim of making the passage through the airport a much more attractive and comfortable experience for travellers.
Although Five Flames Mobile had already worked at AWS, the client’s requirements were very strict, so he looked for a partner to help him with this part of the project.
Five Flames Mobile has a policy of looking for collaborations with industry experts rather than covering 100% of the project size, and in this case it relied on apser to manage the architecture of that application in AWS.
Implemented solution
The first step was to conduct an audit of Five Flames Mobile’s testing deployment on its AWS account. Following the approach of the Well Architected Framework, the development carried out was analyzed and recommendations were given to follow in each of the points.
Once this was done, a new AWS account was deployed for the client and security measures were implemented through IAM, CloudTrail and GuardDuty.
In addition, the application code was prepared to host it in AWS Elastic BeanStalk and implemented:
- CloudFront for content distribution
- RDS in MultiAZ for the database
- Route53 for DNS management
- CloudWatch for escalation events
Results
The main objective was to pass a security audit carried out on the implementation. Since updated Elastic Beanstalk AMI’s were being used with Amazon Linux, system level protection was guaranteed and the audit was passed smoothly.
However, the design of the architecture was done with scalability and resilience as maximum exponents. These principles were assessed when the airport had a serious problem with the display system providing flight information.
On that day, the AWS Elastic Beanstalk system automatically scaled to accommodate the increased use of the app. Once the usage pattern returned to normal, resources that were no longer required were withdrawn. The agile response shown by the app led the client to congratulate Five Flames Mobile for the performance of the app.
In addition, Five Flames Mobile won the 2018 ‘e-volución’ award in the category “Best Mobility Solution” for this project. This award is given to those companies that have developed a mobility app that facilitates the digital transformation of citizens, making excellent use of both the format and the particularities of mobile devices.
Next steps
After the success of Glasgow Airport, the same application was deployed but in this case for Aberdeen Airport. The same application is currently being implemented at other airports.
In addition, Five Flames Mobile is evaluating with apser the modifications that would be needed in its application to be able to use Amazon Cognito as an identification system.
