What challenge did the company face?

FC Barcelona hosted its entire retail structure on a hybrid platform deployed on AWS and in a data center in Barcelona, both locations managed by apser.
Mixed server platform
This platform was deployed on a mixed server platform Windows Server 2012 with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and Linux, around the ICG Software point-of-sale management tool with integrations with SAGE and Qlikview among other solutions.
Reorganizing your management
In 2018, FC Barcelona decided to reorganise its management of the market and, although the manufacture of the merchandising is still the responsibility of Nike, the exploitation of the same is carried out by the club through a new company, Barça Licensing and Merchandising. This change meant that FC Barcelona was now in charge of managing both the operational and IT levels of all these services.
Nike then faced a challenge in multiple areas:
He needed to maintain all the historical work carried out with his client FC Barcelona during the 16 years of relationship
As manufacturing was going to remain in the hands of Nike, it was necessary to continue working with the same operations as until then.
Given that the economic impact of FC Barcelona's decision was very large, the aim was to maintain minimum costs but with maximum durability and stability of the service.

Solution implemented

Apser offered you an initial assessment that would allow us to analyze the current status of your AWS account and, subsequently, our Sherpa support service to be able to implement the potential improvements detected during the assessment.

Nike consulted with apser and the ICG solution provider on a plan to achieve the objectives it had set. With the clear objective of keeping costs to a minimum, apser proposed the creation of a New customer area in AWS for Nike, since the one in use was going to be managed exclusively by FC Barcelona, with a server with the minimum viable resources and migrating the database relative to the data owned by Nike with the help of the ICG partner.

A was deployed EC2 server based on SSD EBS storage. It was also implemented Lifecycle Manager for managing backups and GuardDuty to analyze possible security incidents. To minimize unauthorized access, access to the server was restricted using security groups limited to the IPs of the client's offices.

As an additional expense control measure, apser implemented its solution server schedulings to turn on and off coinciding with the client's working day. The deployment was carried out in July 2019 according to the schedule designed to not impact the client's business.

Listed below are some of the optimizations made by service:

AWS IAM. Named IAM users were created and passwords were strengthened to increase account access security.
Enabling AWS CloudTrail and AWS GuardDuty.
Amazon VPC. Until now, the account had a default VPC. Following AWS best practices, a network with 3 public networks and 3 private networks was created and all resources were migrated to the new VPC, to ensure correct networking sizing.
Amazon EC2. A significant amount of security work was carried out and, through Amazon CloudWatch, some elements that were not being monitored until then were monitored in order to have a better view of the use and consumption of the computing service. A new backup policy was also configured and an upgrade of t2 instances to next-generation t3 instances was carried out with the aim of improving both performance and costs.
Amazon RDS. Consumption was optimized by avoiding traffic costs associated with regional data transfers between availability zones, and some improvements were applied at both the security and configuration levels, such as extending the backup retention period to 30 days.
Amazon Route 53: DNS management has been moved internally using Amazon Route 53. This has allowed us to reduce DNS propagation times in the event of changes.
Amazon S3 + Amazon Cloudfront: We moved public static content from Amazon EBS on Amazon EC2 to a bucket on Amazon S3 and started serving it through Amazon Cloudfront. This allowed us to reduce costs and provide secure data access.
Regarding cost optimization, some proposals were presented to reduce costs based on the contracting of Saving Plans or Reserved Instances.

Results

Once the deployment was completed, the client could continue using the platform with which they had been working for more than 15 years, maintaining the history of their data, in a maximum security environment, and with a 20% cost savings thanks to the server automatically shutting down at night.

0%

> Savings on platform costs, thanks to AWS's pay-per-use approach that allows the platform to be available only when the client really needs it

Next steps

The following challenges are planned:

> Minimize costs even further allowing the client to power cycle the server when needed

> Inclusion of a VPN system for private access to the environment even if it is not located in any of the client's offices
